At the start of the ’80s, German record label Folk Freak decided to gather musicians from different countries in a recording studio and to see what happened. Headlining the sessions were Scotland’s Dick Gaughan and Ireland’s Andy Irvine (multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter and member of seminal Irish bands Sweeney’s Men, Planxty and Patrick Street). This magnificent CD, called “one of the best acoustic recordings ever released” by the Irish Times, rare on first release and long out of print), showcases traditional and contemporary material (including a cover of Bob Dylan’s “My Back Pages”) with Gaughan and Irvine splitting the vocals and performing on a variety of instruments with additional flute, sax, fiddle and electric piano. About Andy Irvine “An institution in Irish music” – USA Today Although singer/multi-instrumentalist Andy Irvine has been a key figure in traditional Irish music since the late Sixties, he has recorded only infrequently as a "solo" artist. Way Out Yonder is only his third commercially released album under his own name. But he's been busy: as a member of the seminal electric folk band Sweeney's Men and the Irish “supergroups” Planxty and Patrick Street (with whom he is currently touring); as a duo partner with fellow musical icons Dick Gaughan (on the Parallel Lines CD on Appleseed) and Paul Brady; and as a solo performer and traveler, bringing back Eastern European influences to season his sound.
